CELL PHONE CHALLENGE

Will you answer the Call?

The Oklahoma City Zoo invites you to help save gorillas by donating old or used cell phones to the Give for Gorillas Cell Phone Challenge.

Cell phones are an integral part of the American lifestyle but the production of cell phones is having a costly impact on the environment. Because conservation is in our nature, we are looking to the community to help our efforts to save wild gorillas.

Schools, organizations, businesses or individuals must register for the Challenge and then work to collect as many cell phones as they can from April 1 to May 12, 2014. Donated cell phones can be dropped off at the Zoo’s Guest Relations office during regular business hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. (All phones must be turned in by 4:30 p.m. on May 12 to be counted towards the Challenge.)

And the reward--in addition to the satisfaction that gorilla habitats have been saved? Wild prizes, of course! The group or individual collecting the most phones will win a prize package from the Zoo!

HOW DOES DONATING CELL PHONES SAVE GORILLAS?

Gathering discarded phones and donating them to the Give for Gorillas Cell Phone Challenge helps protect animals like chimpanzees and gorillas that live in areas of the world where cell phone materials are mined. Coltan, a substance commonly found in small electronics, is mined in areas that are home to gorillas and the process of removing it often results in the loss of that important habitat. Phones donated to the Zoo, however, will be dismantled and disposed of following strict environmental guidelines by our partners at the Eco-Cell Recycling Program with old parts being used to refurbish new cell phones and sold in developing countries. Not only will this decrease the need to mine for more substances like coltan, but also 100 percent of the Zoo's proceeds from the Challenge will be donated to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.

WHAT COOL STUFF CAN WE WIN BY DONATING CELL PHONES?

The group or individual collecting the most cell phones will win the ultimate Zoo prize package of one complimentary education program, a gift basket from the Zoo’s Safari Gift Shop, a one-of-a-kind animal painting and a plaque to show off your contribution to conservation!

HOW CAN MY GROUP REGISTER FOR THE CELL PHONE CHALLENGE?

All groups or individuals must register in order to participate. To register, please download this form and return it when you bring your cell phone donation to the Zoo by 4:30 p.m. on May 12, 2014. Now, get the word out about the Challenge to others in your school or organization, create posters, use the materials provided by the Zoo, spread the word and have fun!
