Animal Technician Supervisor (Aquariums)

Description

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden is looking for a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and motivated individual to manage to day-to-day operations of the aquarium department and lead staff in a team atmosphere. Responsibilities include: feeding and caring for aquarium specimens, medicating animals and maintaining quarantine protocols as directed, cleaning and maintaining exhibits and life support systems, record keeping, establishing and maintaining animal enrichment and training programs, and effectively working with other Zoo staff and interacting with the public.

The chosen candidate must have a clear understanding of fish and invertebrate biology, marine animal health, water quality analysis and aquatic life support systems, excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to recognize, independently analyze, and address accordingly any animal health or water quality issues. A desire to increase knowledge in the field by participating in scientific meetings and conferences is expected. Must be SCUBA certified or willing to be certified within one year of hire, have the ability to life 50 pounds, and work weekends and holidays as scheduled. Must be willing to serve, if requested to do so, on the emergency response team which responds to animal-related emergencies within the Zoo. Training, including use of firearms, is provided for all that are asked to serve.

The minimum salary for this position is $13.87 per hour plus excellent benefits. Applications or resumes will be accepted through July 13, 2009 (4:30 p.m.). EOE.

Requirements

At least five years full-time experience in animal care/animal husbandry work is required. A Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Animal Husbandry, Animal Science, or closely related area may substitute for two years of the required experience.
