APRIL HAPPENINGS AT THE OKC ZOO
APRIL: DINOSAURS UNEARTHED
Come on, the wild is calling! Discover Dinosaurs Unearthed, a full-blown dino-reality experience on exhibit at the Zoo. See such prehistoric giants as T-Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops and many others—moving, roaring, life-size animatronic wonders that will take your breath away! Presented by Dr Pepper, Dinosaurs Unearthed is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and is part of your paid admission.
APRIL: ZOOFRIENDS ANIMAL ADOPTION PACKAGE
Help ZooFriends preserve and conserve wildlife and wild places around the globe. Adopt a giraffe or lion to help contribute toward the health, nutritional and enrichment needs of these animals at the Zoo. Your $40 donation will be appreciated, and you’ll receive your choice of a plush giraffe or lion, adoption certificate, a fact sheet and name recognition on grounds! APRIL: OSTRICH EGG BREAKFAST TICKETS ON SALE
Twenty-three years and still cookin’! OZS ZooFriends will host their annual Ostrich Egg Breakfast on Saturday, May 9 from 8 to 11 a.m. Dig in and enjoy an immense, all-you-can-eat spread that includes scrambled hens’ eggs, made-to-order omelets, pancakes, sausage, milk, juice, coffee and new this year–waffles and Krispy Kreme doughnuts! Then, stay and work off that breakfast by enjoying the Zoo’s Zoolympics celebration later that morning -perfect for children ages 11 and under. Ostrich Egg Breakfast tickets are $8 per adult and $5 per child (members) and $10 per adult and $7 per child (nonmembers). Children two and under eat free. Ticket prices include Zoo admission, breakfast and sea lion show admission. APRIL 07: READ ACROSS OKLAHOMA 2009: READING ROUNDUP
Yee-haw! On Tuesday, April 7, the Zoo is hosting Read Across Oklahoma 2009: Reading Roundup. From 9 to 11:30 a.m. kids can take a safari on grounds visiting different animal stations where they will learn fun facts and receive a souvenir sticker. Plus, the first 1,000 children 11 and under to attend the event will receive a free book.
APRIL 12: HOPABALOO
Bounce to the Zoo for HOPabaloo! We have an extra special day of fun planned for your entire family on Easter Sunday, April 12. Have brunch with the Easter Bunny in The Canopy Restaurant from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. then let the little ones participate in our Tiny Tots Egg Scrambles. The egg scramble times are 1:30 p.m. (2 and under), 2 p.m. (3 year olds), 2:30 p.m. (4 year olds) and 2:45 p.m. (5 year olds). Each egg scramble is based on a first come, first served basis and include prizes. They will take place in the grassy area located by the Roughneck Picnic Pavilion. APRIL 18: BOWLING FOR RHINOS
Roll out for conservation and support the Oklahoma City Zoo’s chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) as they host a Bowling for Rhinos event on Saturday, April 18 at the Frontier Lanes Bowling Alley in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The cost is $20 per person and includes two games, shoe rental and door prize opportunities. Advance registration is required and may be done by calling (405) 425-0611.
APRIL 25: 2009 WALK MS AT THE ZOO
Join the movement at Walk MS and take a beautiful 3 mile walk, roll or stroll around the Oklahoma City Zoo, as we raise awareness and funds to find the cause and cure to multiple sclerosis. There is guaranteed fun for the whole family with entertainment on the route and at the finish festival with food, music and more. Event times are 7:30 a.m. (registration opens), 8:45 a.m. (welcome and warm-up), 9 a.m. (official walk start) and 11 a.m. (walk activities close). APRIL 25: NATIONAL GUARD APPRECIATION DAY AT THE ZOO
The Oklahoma National Guard Family Readiness Program will celebrate the 5th annual National Guard Military Appreciation Day at the Zoo on Saturday, April 25. Admission is $1 per person with a coupon. Children two and under are free.
APRIL 25: JUNGLE GYM ART PARTY
Jump in to a day of artistic fun during the Zoo’s Jungle Gym Art Party. On Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., children ages 11 and under will enjoy a variety of unique art activities at the Zoo’s Jungle Gym Playground. Plus, students from The University of Central Oklahoma’s Department of Theatre, Dance and Media Arts will perform select scenes from The Mad Adventures of Mr. Toad in the Jungle Gym Playground. This activity is free with regular Zoo admission.
APRIL 25: AN EVENING ESCAPE
Save the date for Saturday, April 25 and make plans to attend this year’s An Evening EscAPE. Join the Zoo’s chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) as they host an “ape”pealing dinner, lots of fun and gorillas during this special fundraising event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Guests will dine on a delectable dinner at the Zoo’s Great EscApe, engage in a behind-the-scenes tour of the area, then enjoy a special presentation and silent auction. All proceeds from the event will benefit ape conservation projects. The cost is $50 per person, and pre-registration is required. APRIL 26: PARTY FOR THE PLANET
Let’s party for the planet! Join us for an Earth Day event like no other as we
celebrate wildlife and wild places. The Zoo, an accredited member of the American Zoo
and Aquarium Association (AZA), will be hosting a Party for the Planet event on
Sunday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Party goers of all ages will learn about
the importance of conservation through various activities including animal enrichments,
keeper chats, live entertainment, storytelling, a craft station, a scavenger safari for kids
with prizes and more! The winners of the Dr Pepper Vending Machine Art Contest will
be announced at 1 p.m. Tune in to Magic 104.1 KMGL, the official radio sponsor of
Party for the Planet, to learn more. This activity is free with Zoo admission.
APRIL 29: MILK MUSTACHE MOBILE DRINK WELL. LIVE WELL. TOUR
From March to September, the National “got milk?” Milk Mustache Mobile Drink Well. Live Well. Tour is traveling coast-to-coast to reintroduce Americans to this nutrient powerhouse and its array of benefits. This year, the Milk Mustache Mobile Tour is making a stop at the Oklahoma City Zoo on Wednesday, April 29. Oklahoma City residents can visit the Zoo on April 29 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. to experience free, interactive activities including:
· Ice-cold milk samples from local dairies.
· A milk mustache photo booth.
· Health assessments from a registered dietitian.
· Chair massages by a licensed massage therapist.
· Information about the health benefits of milk.
Event attendees can also enter the Healthy Meals Made Simple Sweepstakes for a chance to win a prize from Real Simple® Magazine, including a healthy meal from a personal chef and a year’s supply of milk.
