OKC ZOO ANIMAL ARTISTS BACK FOR SHOW AND SALE

Wild impressions with a flourish of fins, scales, claws, paws, and tails! It’s “Art Gone Wild: Paintings by OKC Zoo Animals 2011.” Join the Oklahoma City Zoo at the In Your Eye Gallery in the Historic Paseo Arts District for the second annual Art Gone Wild art show featuring works of art created by our own favorite furry, scaled and feathered friends! Each work of art has been made especially for the show by the Zoo’s resident animal artists, with some help from their keepers. Some animals use a paint brush while others choose to paint with their paws, claws, tails and scales. Artist animals will include elephants, snakes, rhinoceros, flamingos, grizzly bears, and more! New artists this year are sure to make a splash as the archer fish have gotten into the painting mix. Each painting is unique, and each artist has his or her unique techniques. All proceeds from the Zoo animal artwork will support Zoo conservation and enrichment programs. Also new this year on display, will be portraits of the Zoo’s animals, created by their human art friends from In Your Eye Gallery. These artists created a unique portrait of their favorite animal in a variety of medias that include photography, mixed media, acrylic, glass and encaustics. In Your Eye Gallery will donate 10% of their sales to Zoo conservation projects.

The keepers at the Zoo work to enrich the lives of the animals in their care every day. They add interesting and complex activities to the animals’ daily routines. Enrichment activities are fun for both animals and keepers. Zoo staff has found that many of our animals enjoy painting as an enrichment activity. They are given canvases and non-toxic paints to use as they create their masterpieces. With a little help from their keepers and sometimes a paintbrush, they create beautiful works of art!

Opening night will be Friday, August 5 from 6 to 10 pm and there will be a closing reception on Friday, August 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm Special gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 6 pm. Show and sale runs through August 27.
