OKC ZOO ANNOUNCES HOLIDAY WINTER HAPPENINGS - 2012

HOLIDAY/WINTER HAPPENINGS AT THE OKC ZOO

 

DECEMBER AND WINTER SCHEDULES

The following Zoo attractions have established off-season hours.

  • Daily elephant presentations will begin December 17 and continue through January 4 at 1:15 p.m., weather permitting of 55 degrees or higher.
  • Giraffe feedings are from 11 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Friday through Sunday, weather permitting of 55 degrees or higher.
  • Lorikeet and Barnyard areas will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, weather permitting or 55 degrees or higher.
  • Safari Tram and Endangered Species Carousel will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, weather permitting of 55 degrees or higher.
  • The ZooZeum will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • All other rides and attractions are closed for the season.

 

DECEMBER THROUGH FEBRUARY: FREE ADMISSION MONDAYS
Celebrate the season in wild style! The Zoo is offering free admission for everyone each Monday in December, January and February.

 

DECEMBER: ZOOFRIENDS HOLIDAY SPECIALS
Just in time for the holiday season, ZooFriends has some wild gift ideas for everyone on your list!

  • Renew before January and save! Receive $5 off any new, renewal or gift membership purchased now through December 31 (excludes Junior and Adult membership levels). Contact the ZooFriends office at (405) 425-0618 for information.
  •  Go wild and adopt an alligator, chimpanzee or sea lion for the animal lover on your list. Net proceeds benefit the health and enrichment needs of all animals at the Zoo. You will receive a plush animal, adoption certificate, fact sheet and name recognition on Zoo grounds for the 2013 season.
  • ZooFriends can shop ‘til they drop with a 25 percent discount at the Zoo’s Safari Gift Shop from December 1 through December 31. This discount only applies to non-sale items.

 

DECEMBER: WILD WISH TREE
Become a secret Santa for your favorite animals at the Zoo! With the Wild Wish Tree, animal lovers and Zoo fans have an opportunity to donate gifts to Oklahoma City Zoo animals. Located in the ZooFriends office in the Global Plaza, the Wild Wish Tree is decorated from top to bottom with ornaments bearing descriptions of enrichment items for Zoo animals. Diverse in size, shape and cost, each wish list item has been selected to generate the interest, curiosity, play and enjoyment of particular animals or species.

 

To select a Wild Wish item from the tree, you may visit the ZooFriends' office daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  After purchasing the item, you may bring your gift back to the ZooFriends’ office from December 1 through December 31. Or, you may purchase "Wild Wish" gifts online through Amazon.com and the item will be shipped automatically to the Zoo.  Just visit www.amazon.com, click on Wish List and search for Oklahoma City Zoo. DECEMBER: GIVE THE GIFT OF DISCOVERY WITH THE ZOO’S BEHIND THE SCENES PROGRAM

A Behind The Scenes gift certificate is your chance to give a once-in-a-lifetime experience this holiday season to a friend or family member (ages 14 and older). Recipients will get the opportunity to spend a morning with our amazing zoo keepers as they care for, train and enrich their animals, and share valuable wildlife information. Recipients may choose one of ten animal areas during the 2013 Zoo season, which includes Saturdays from February through April, and Sundays from May through October. Spaces are limited so pre-registration is required. Gift certificates are $100 for ZooFriends and $120 for non-members, and are good through October 2013. DECEMBER: SAFARI GIFT SHOP HAS ALL YOU NEED

Now through December 24, the Zoo’s Safari Gift Shop in the Global Plaza has all the holiday gift items you need, from children’s books, plush animals and home décor to new, one-of-a-kind “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” t-shirts and gift items. Of course, convenient gift cards are available to save time and simplify holiday shopping. ZooFriends members will receive a 25 percent discount through December 31.

 

DECEMBER 1 – 24: DECK THE ZOO

From December 1 through December 24, get creative and bring an edible wildlife ornament (made from items such as bagels, fruits, pine cones, popcorn, seeds, peanut butter, honey, etc.) to the Zoo and receive admission for only $1! Your tasty treats will be displayed with some of the Zoo’s plant life in the Global Plaza, and will nurture and enrich the Zoo’s native animals. One ornament for the animals per person required for the admission discount. Not valid with any other discount or promotion.

 

DECEMBER 8 AND 15: CUPCAKES WITH SANTA

Who can beat cupcakes, crafts, creativity and a visit with Santa? Bring your camera to capture the fun for all ages. Cost per child is $18 for ZooFriends members and $20 for non-members. Adults must accompany children. Up to two adults are free with paid child registration. Program dates to choose from are:

  • Saturday, December 8 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, or 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 15 from 10:30 a.m. to noon or 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

DECEMBER 10: SANTA DELIVERS
Santa will be making a stop on the wild side to deliver holiday goodies to some of his furry and feathered friends on Zoo grounds Monday, December 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The fun continues in the Canopy Restaurant where guests can enjoy free hot chocolate and doughnuts while supplies last. This activity is free and reservations are not required. Be sure to bring your camera to get pictures with Santa!

 

DECEMBER 25: The Zoo is closed for Christmas Day.

 

DECEMBER 29: OVERNIGHT ZOOSNOOZE

Create lasting memories on a guided night hike with Zoo animals, sounds, smells and stars. Cap your evening with hot cocoa and popcorn. Rise to a continental breakfast and another guided tour of more animals. Ages include four years and older. Parents must accompany children. The program begins at 7 p.m. December 29 and ends at 9 a.m. December 30, unless the Zoo is closed due to inclement weather. Cost: $25 per child, $10 per adult. JANUARY 1: The Zoo is closed for New Year’s Day.

 

JANUARY 2 AND 3: WINTER BREAK DAY CAMPS

Need some after-holiday fun for the kids? Hosted by the Zoo’s Education Department, day camps are available for kids ages four through 11. Camps meet from 9 a.m. to noon each day.  Snacks will be provided, but please bring lunch! The cost per child per day is $20 for ZooFriends members and $25 for non-members.   • Wednesday, January 2: Kittens and Mittens
  • Thursday, January 3: Frosty Paws and Chilly Dogs

 

JANUARY 19: PRINCESS AND PIRATES FAMILY PROGRAM

Greetings your majesty! Ahoy ye pirates! Crafts, snacks and live animals will be part of this imaginary adventure for all ages. Also, guest author Tammi Sauer will read from her new book, “Not So Ordinary Princess.” Costumes are encouraged. Children must be accompanied by adults. Up to two adults are free with paid child registration. Cost is $15 per child for ZooFriends members and $18 for non-members. ‘Tis the season to go wild at the Oklahoma City Zoo, Oklahoma’s number one attraction and one of the nation’s top three zoos, as named in the 2012 10Besties Readers' Choice Travel Awards. The Zoo is a proud member of Oklahoma City’s Adventure District located near the crossroads of I-44 and I-35. The Zoo is open daily, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s days. Regular hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $8 for adults, and $5 for children ages three through 11 and seniors ages 65 and over. Children two and under are admitted free. Military members, spouses and up to five children receive a 50 percent discount. Parking is free. Additional fees for rides and attractions within the Zoo apply.
