Meet the Graphics Department

Spotlight On: The Graphics Department

Meet the Graphics Department at the Oklahoma City Zoo! This talented group of artists and designers is responsible for maintaining and creating all the signage on Zoo grounds, as well as creating the fantastic booths for Haunt the Zoo! From painting backdrops by hand to sculpting animals out of craft foam to coming up with new ideas for booths and props, the Graphics Department works hard all year long to make Haunt the Zoo a special time for all!

Name: Jerry Webb

Title: Graphics Manager

Residence: Oklahoma City

Tenure at the Zoo: 4.5 months

What are your primary responsibilities at the Zoo/within the Graphics Department?

I manage the graphics team as we maintain existing and create new signage and graphics for the Zoo.

You're the "new guy" on the Graphics Team. What do you love the most about your job so far?

I have always loved coming to the Zoo and I have been a professional signmaker since I was 16. This job combines the two - I get to do what I love in a place that I love!

Which Haunt the Zoo booth is your favorite and why?

The new animal photo-op is my favorite. It was a team effort - we all worked on it and it turned out really nice.

What are your favorite animals at the Zoo and why?

That answer changes every week or so! This week I would have to say giraffes. When I go around the giraffe loop in my golf cart, they see me coming from a distance and follow me around!

Sign and graphic design and installation, building 3D props and sign maintenance.

What is your favorite Haunt the Zoo memory?

Involving my son in some of the work we do and bringing him to Haunt the Zoo. I also like seeing all the kids come through every night in their costumes and seeing how they interact with some of the props and banners we make.

Which Haunt the Zoo booth is your favorite and why?

The graveyard. I really like the way it looks at night with the lights and tombstones and the smoke machine going.

What are your favorite animals at the Zoo and why?

Any of the big cats - I think they are impressive in everything they do. Also most of the animals in Oklahoma Trails, mainly because I know more about animals from Oklahoma/North America.

Title: Graphics Technician

Residence: Oklahoma City

Tenure at the Zoo: 8 years

What do you love the most about your job?

I love the animals and the many employees that have become like family to me. I love the diversity of what I get to do - from painting to designing and working with other departments to helping with the conservation messaging for our animals.

What is your favorite Haunt the Zoo booth and why?

My favorite Haunt the Zoo booth is the Graveyard. I love all of the tombstones and the fog that adds to the creepiness!

What do you wish that other people knew about your job?

I want everyone to know how much time, effort and compassion we put into our job! As an artist I want my products to look great and my goal is to always let everyone know what a great place the Zoo is.

What are your favorite animals at the Zoo?

My favorite animals are the Great Apes. I think they are so fun to watch and I love the interaction you can have with them in the day room areas. Kelele the gorilla is my favorite.

Title: Graphics Technician:

Residence: Bethany, OK

Tenure at the Zoo: 7 years

What are your primary responsibilities at the Zoo/within the Graphics Department?

When people ask me what a graphic designer does at the zoo I tell them, "Without me, you wouldn't know what animal you are looking at, where you can get something to eat, or where to find the restrooms!"  We also get to make all of the props for Haunt the Zoo and  set everything up for the event.  Everything from banners, props & lights.

What is your favorite Haunt the Zoo memory?

My favorite Haunt the Zoo memory is setting up the front gate Haunt the Zoo panels.  Jay & I for the past few years have been the ones to put them up.  Each year we time ourselves to see if we can beat our record from the previous year.  Last year it was set up in under 17 minutes, beating our last record of 21 minutes!

What is your favorite Haunt the Zoo booth?

My favorite Haunt the Zoo Booth is Super Heroes.  I think everyone at one point or another has wanted super powers.  I loved painting the banners for that booth!  It helped me bring out my own inner femme fatale.

What do you love the most about your job?

Whenever someone finds out that I work at the Zoo, they get really excited and ask me, "What do you do there?"  My reply, "I'm a graphic designer."  They then look a little sad and depressed and say, "Oh...you don't work with the animals?" I wish people would understand that although I don't work directly with the animals, I get to see them everyday.  Art has always been my passion, and I am doing what I love, plus I get the bonus of hanging out with some great animals (and people) on a daily basis.

What do you love the most about your job?

The thing i love most about my job is that it lets me express my creative side, limited as it is.  And it allows my inner child to come to the forefront.

Which Haunt the Zoo booth is your favorite?

My favorite booth is the "Scarecrow" booth.  There is just something about it that makes me smile when I look at it.

What are your favorite animals at the Zoo?

Right now, I would have to say the elephants.  Malee the elephant calf is just so adorable!
